B5 Helps Produce Energy
Vitamin B5, also known as calcium
pantothenate, is a water-soluable B vitamin. It is one of eight,
and its function is to help the body convert carbohydrates into
sugar, which is then burned to produce energy. Vitamin B5 is often
times referred to as a complex B vitamin and it is considered essential
for breaking down fats and protein. It is also vital for the health
of the nervous system, eyes, hair, mouth, skin and liver. Aside
from burning carbohydrates for energy, vitamin B5 also has a role
in making red blood cells and maintaining a healthy digestive tract,
as well as helping the body use other vitamins effectively. It also
strengthens the body’s immune system and helps the body deal
better with stressful situations. Basically, vitamin B5 can nearly
do it all, and it nearly does.
Vitamin B5 makes an appearance in most foods, which is why people
rarely suffer from a vitamin B5 deficiency. Foods containing vitamin
B5 are meats, vegetables, whole unprocessed grains, corn, tomatoes,
egg yolks, kale and much, much more. Those who do not receive enough
vitamin B5 in their system will suffer from the following symptoms:
burning feet, stomach pains, irritability, depression and fatigue.
Vitamin B5 is used for:
- Wound healing—some
studies suggest that vitamin B5 can potentially heal wounds
faster.
- Burns—a large amount
of micronutrients are lost when the body suffers from serious
burns, making it extremely important that its micronutrients
be replenished tenfold. It is unknown which micronutrients are
best for those who’ve suffered burns, but many studies
have suggested that B complex vitamins like vitamin B5 can possibly
help speed up the recovery process.
- High Cholesterol—animals
and humans have been studied for years to find out if pantethine,
a form of vitamin B5, may decrease high cholesterol levels in
those who may be at risk for heart disease.
Supplements can potentially affect medications
