The Anti Aging Antioxidant Link to Younger-Looking Skin

Growing older is inevitable. The wrinkles, the sagging skin, the loss of volume are all signs that the hands of time are spinning faster and faster. There are fast remedies available for those who want to smooth the crow’s feet at the corner of their eyes, or if they want to add suppleness to their now droopy facial skin. Still, quick anti aging solutions may be expensive and sometimes painful. If you’re looking for a less drastic change at a fraction of the cost, look no further than your grocery store, or even closer, your refrigerator. Those potatoes, tomatoes and fish you had for dinner last night were filled with vitamins C, E and D, each of which are an anti aging antioxidant.

An anti aging antioxidant is a substance that scavenges free radicals in the body. Free radicals are harmful oxygen molecules that damage cells in the body and are thought to lead to ailments like heart disease, cancer, macular dystrophy and Alzheimer’s disease.

The following are a few of the most well known anti aging antioxidants:

  • Vitamin C—at least some amount of this anti aging antioxidant can be found in all fruits and vegetables. Green peppers, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, broccoli and potatoes tend to have the highest sources of vitamin C, as do cauliflower, winter squash, red peppers, berries and Brussels sprouts. Vitamin C is necessary for growth and development, but the body can’t store it. People must constantly supply the body with the vitamin C it needs in order to lead a healthy life. This anti aging antioxidant helps repair body tissues and is needed to form collagen, which is an important protein that makes skin, scar tissue, and blood vessels.
  • Vitamin E—this anti aging antioxidant helps in the formation of red blood cells, and it is thought to help protect the heart. The best way for the body to receive enough vitamin E is through a balanced diet. Vitamin E can be found in corn, nuts, olives, asparagus, wheat germ and vegetable oils.
  • Vitamin D—this anti aging antioxidant can be found in fish, fortified milk and eggs. It is thought that at least 10 minutes of sun a day will help provide the body with enough production of vitamin D to prevent a deficiency. Vitamin D’s function is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus in order to maintain strong bones.
