Alpha-Carotene: The Lesser Know Carotene Compound
When carotene compounds come up in discussions about health, the first thing that comes to mind is beta-carotene. However, there is a lesser-known cousin to this popular antioxidant that is just as important: alpha-carotene. Usually found in the same foods as beta-carotene but in smaller amounts, alpha-carotene works with its beta brother to produce vitamin A. Alpha-carotene is less effective as a precursor to this important nutrient than beta-carotene, but on its own it is a much more powerful antioxidant.
Much like beta, alpha-carotene is found in foods like:
- Carrots
- Sweet potatoes
- Squash
- Brussel sprouts
- Kiwi
- Spinach
- Broccoli
- Kale
- Mango
- Cantaloupe
- Much more
Smokers, people who abuse alcohol, and people with low calories diets that do not eat enough fruits and vegetables may not get enough alpha-carotene and should consider a change in lifestyle or the addition of a vitamin A supplement to their health plan.
