Allergy Resources For The Treatment
And Prevention of Symptoms

allergyPeople who suffer from allergies are always eager to find allergy resources that will explain where their symptoms are coming from and suggest ways to ease those symptoms. "Allergy" is a general term for a frustrating group of ailments causing mild to severe symptoms for almost 20 percent of Americans. That's right; an estimated 50 million Americans suffer from at least one allergy according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. For every type of allergy, there are allergy resources such as natural medications, cleansers, and filters to help control allergy symptoms.

Whether you're allergic to certain foods because of milk and dairy allergies, or you have trouble going outdoors because of seasonal allergies, all allergies are considered a disease of the immune system. Simply stated, people with allergies have an immune system that reacts defensively against relatively harmless substances which would not cause any problem for the general public. Even though allergies begin in the immune system, most allergy resources are aimed at treating allergy symptoms instead of treating the immune system.

How an Individual's Health is Affected by an Allergy

An allergy occurs when a substance - such as insect venom, plant pollen, or a particular food - is deemed harmful by a person's immune system. When the body is introduced to this substance, the immune system creates antibodies against it, which in turn stimulates the body's production of histamines and other inflammation-inducing chemicals. This causes the individual to experience allergy symptoms such as hives, eczema, nausea, itchy eyes, sinusitis, vomiting, and/or runny nose, among others. Anaphylactic shock, which is typically caused by a food allergy and leads to enlarged blood vessels, reduced blood pressure, and loss of consciousness, can occur if an individual has a severe allergy. Health professionals advise those with severe allergies to avoid that particular food entirely.

The most common substances that cause individuals to experience an allergic reaction include:

  • Nuts, wheat, shellfish, eggs, milk, and certain other foods
  • Mold
  • Insect venom
  • Animal dander
  • Dust mite excretion
  • Latex
  • Pollen
  • Drugs
