ADD Treatments for Children and Teenagers

ADD Treatments for Children and TeenagersWhen child or teenager suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder, aka ADD, they often have problems focusing on a task, can’t follow directions easily, and get frustrated with mundane work. They are also spontaneous and act before they think their actions through. Luckily for the parents of these children and teenagers, there are various ADD treatments that are thought to help decrease the severity of the symptoms. These ADD treatments may help improve the way children and teenagers function at school, work, or in other social situations.

There are various ADD treatments that parents can choose from when trying to help their children:

  • Medications – there are various medications prescribed as ADD treatments on the market today. These medications are often stimulants, although there are also non-stimulant medications available, too. Your physician should supervise the effectiveness of the medication, monitor the possible side effects, and more.
  • Behavioral interventions – some believe that the surrounding environment influences ADD sufferers. Therefore if a person with ADD is surrounded by chaos, they’ll act chaotic, and if they’re in a soothing environment, they’ll be calm. They also respond well to rewards and consequences, so if they’re behaving well they should be praised, but if they’re acting badly, they should be scolded. This method is most commonly used for children.
  • Parent training – although some parents may think they don’t need ADD treatments themselves, some researchers believe parents can help their children by undergoing parental training. This training prepares the parent with tools and techniques for managing a child with ADD.
  • Social skills training – this helps the ADD sufferer with their social skills. It teaches them how to act appropriately when interacting with others.

If you suspect your child or teenager is exhibiting signs of ADD, consult your physician. He or she can recommend various methods for you to choose from to help bring your child some peace.
