Zinc as a Natural ADD Medicine?
While the only proven way to effectively treat the symptoms of ADD is with prescription medicine and therapy, many patients choose to supplement their prescription with natural supplements and vitamins in an effort to help reduce the severity of side effects and enhance the potency of their medication.
One of the most popular choices for patients taking ADD medicine is zinc supplements. Some studies have suggested that people suffering from ADD/ADHD have low levels of zinc in their bodies. Although there is no evidence that zinc helps with inattentiveness, many studies have shown that zinc supplementation through diet and/or oral vitamins may help to reduce the symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity and is an effective alternative treatment for ADHD symptoms.
Zinc is widely available as an oral supplement, but there are also many foods containing high levels of zinc. These include:
- Shellfish and seafood, especially oysters
- Red meat
- Poultry
- Beans
- Nuts
- Whole grains
Before you or your child start taking any new kind of supplement or vitamin, it is important to consult with your physician to identify any possible allergies or health risks that may develop.
