Acid reflux disease is the result of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) failing to properly close after food has been swallowed. Because of this, acid from the stomach splashes up into the esophagus and causes a painful burning sensation and other symptoms of acid reflux. This could be considered normal in some circumstances, like after eating a large meal or spicy food, but when it is constant and begins causes issues with your quality of life, acid reflux may be the culprit.
Common causes of acid reflux disease are:
- Hiatal hernia
- Lying down after eating
- Consistently eating large meals
- Obesity
- Eating late (before bed)
- Acidic foods

- Some medications
- Pregnancy
As you can see, some causes of acid reflux can easily be prevented or are temporary. However, in some cases home remedies may not be enough and it may be necessary for you to seek medical attention or make significant lifestyle changes in order to control your acid reflux disease.
