Acid Reflux Disease Symptoms
Acid reflux disease is one of the most common conditions in the country, with more than 60 million people complaining of experiencing symptoms at least once a month. A variety of things can cause acid reflux, ranging from hiatal hernias to diet to pregnancy and other physical conditions.
Regardless of how or why you are experiencing acid reflux, the disease symptoms generally remain the same across the board. The most common symptoms include:
- Heartburn
- Regurgitation
- Gas
- Bloating
- Nausea
- Burping
- Abdominal pain
You should consult your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms more than twice a week, or if they increase in consistency or severity. You could have Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). This condition can cause long-term complications such as esophageal bleeding, ulcers, scarring, and Barrett's syndrome, which is severe damage to the lining of the esophagus that may be a precursor to esophageal cancer.
Your doctor will be able to recommend a course of treatment that will work best for you based on the frequency and severity of your acid reflux disease symptoms, and may include changes in diet, exercise, and over-the-counter or prescription medication.
