Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is one of eight
water-soluble B vitamins. Vitamin B12 is a member
of the Vitamin B complex. It contains cobalt, and so is also known as cobalamin. It is exclusively
synthesized by bacteria and is found primarily in meat, eggs, and dairy. All B vitamins help
the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose (sugar), which is "burned" to produce energy.
The B vitamins, often referred to as B complex vitamins, are essential in the breakdown of fats
and protein. B complex vitamins also play an important role in maintaining muscle tone, lining
the digestive tract, and promoting the health of the nervous system, skin, hair, eyes, mouth,
and liver.

Additional information on Vitamin B12...
Vitamin B12 is an especially important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve cells and it aids
in the production of DNA and RNA, the body's genetic material. Vitamin B12 also works closely
together with vitamin B9 (folate) to regulate the formation of red blood cells and to help iron
function better in the body. The synthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), a compound involved
in immune function and mood, depends on the participation of folic acid and vitamin B12.
Similar to other B complex vitamins, cobalamin is considered an "anti-stress" vitamin because it
is believed to enhance the activity of the immune system and improve the body's ability to withstand
stressful conditions. Vitamin B12's primary functions are in the formation of red blood cells and
the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. B12 is necessary for the synthesis of DNA during
cell division. This is especially important in tissues where cells are dividing rapidly, particularly
the bone marrow tissues responsible for red blood cell formation. B12 is also important in maintaining
the nervous system. Nerves are surrounded by an insulating fatty sheath comprised of a complex protein
called myelin. B12 plays a vital role in the metabolism of fatty acids essential for the maintenance
of myelin.
B12 is not present inside foods so much as on top of them within the dirt or bacteria. Because
animals eat plant forms complete with the dirt, they are able to store B12 in their tissues. Meat
eaters are then able to obtain this nutrient in their food, whereas vegans (who do not eat meat,
seafood, dairy or eggs) must obtain it in a supplemental form.
