Anatomy of the Liver
The liver
is the largest gland in the body, and perhaps the most
complex organ in the body. It is located in the upper
side of the abdomen on the right, just above the stomach
and the intestines and below the ribs, lungs, and the
diaphragm. Shaped like a triangle, the liver is a dark
reddish-brown organ. Its consistency is a soft solid,
easily lacerated and highly vascular. In the male it
weighs from 1.4 to 1.6 kilograms and in females from
1.2 to 1.5 kilograms. Without proper blood flow through
the liver, the liver cannot function properly. The blood
that flows through the liver comes from two sources,
the portal vein (nutrient-rich blood) and the hepatic
artery. The portal vein, which carries blood from the
digestive organs to the liver, is the primary blood
source. The secondary source, the hepatic artery, delivers
freshly oxygenated blood from the heart. The inferior
vena cava is a large main vein that carries blood through
the liver and back to the heart.
Structure of the Liver
The liver
consists of two main lobes, both of which are made up
of thousands of lobules. These lobules are connected
to small ducts that connect with larger ducts to ultimately
form the hepatic duct. The hepatic duct transports the
bile produced by the liver cells to the gallbladder
and duodenum.
Functions of the liver
The liver
regulates most chemical levels in the blood. The liver
has both external and internal secretions, which are
formed in the hepatic cells. Its external secretion,
the bile, is collected after passing through the bile
ducts, which join two large ducts that unite to form
the hepatic duct. The bile is either carried to the
gallbladder by the cystic duct or poured directly into
the duodenum by the common bile duct where it aids in
digestion. The bile helps carry away waste products
from the liver. All the blood leaving the stomach and
intestines passes through the liver. The liver processes
this blood and breaks down the nutrients and drugs into
forms that are easier to use for the rest of the body.
More than 500 vital functions have been identified with
the liver. Some of the more well-known functions include:
Production
of certain proteins for blood plasma.
Production
of cholesterol and special proteins to help carry
fats through the body.
Storing
carbohydrates for energy.
Regulation
of blood levels of amino acids, which form the building
blocks of proteins.
Processing
of hemoglobin for use of its iron content.
Conversion
of poisonous ammonia to urea. (Urea is one of the
end products of protein metabolism that is excreted
in the urine.)
Clearing
the blood of drugs and other poisonous substances.
Controlling
blood sugar levels and regulating blood clotting.
Resisting
infections by producing immune factors and removing
bacteria from the blood stream.
When the
liver has broken down harmful substances, its by-products
are excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products
enter the intestine and ultimately leave the body in
the feces. Blood by-products are filtered out by the
kidneys, and leave the body in the form of urine. In
addition, the liver is the only organ in the body that
can regenerate itself.
When the
liver is unhealthy or diseased, many of its functions
are not done properly. Toxins are no longer filtered
out efficiently and may build up in the body. This makes
improving liver health with a liver health supplement
all the more important.
Växa
Liver Formula is a botanical formulation which
effectively cleanses and rejuvenates the liver. This
formulation provides herbal products to promote liver
health with extremely effective principles to aid and
support the liver efficiently. These herbs have a much
deeper value than “simply” the release of
bile; they help ensure a strong and healthy liver and
can be considered as having a system affinity for the
liver, and therefore, a broad supportive effect upon
the whole digestive system and blood.
Växa
Liver Formula is a blend of homeopathic and herbal ingredients
that play a detoxifying role with antioxidant properties;
it’s a natural liver cleanse to prevent free radical
damage. In cases of congestion of the liver, it also
stimulates protein synthesis to accelerate regeneration
of damaged liver tissues.
Växa
Liver Formula is a liver health supplement
formulated to:
Protect
the liver against toxins, poisons and pathogens.
Stimulate
regeneration of liver cells.
Protect
against inflammation.
Barberry
(Berberis vulgaris, which is also called "Oregon grape
root") Barberry is one of the best remedies for correcting
liver function, improving liver health, and promoting
the flow of bile. The secretion of bile is of great
help to the whole digestive and assimilative process.
The role of bile is partially that of facilitating fat
digestion but also of being a natural laxative, and
thus cleansing to the system. It is indicated when there
is an inflammation of the gallbladder or in the presence
of gallstones, when jaundice occurs due to a congested
state of the liver, improves digestion and assimilation.
Current herbal literature commonly recommends barberry
as a treatment for liver problems such as hepatitis
and jaundice. It is also used as a topical antiseptic.
Barberry contains a number of physiologically active
alkaloids, like berberine, and berbamine.
Dandelion
(Taraxacum officinale) As a hepatic and cholagogue,
dandelion is used in inflammation and congestion of
liver and gall bladder. Dandelion is a general tonic
and perhaps the best liver tonic. It acts by
filtering toxins and wastes from the bloodstream. Dandelion
exhibits hypoglycemic effects. It stimulates bile production,
and helps the body get rid of excess water produced
by the diseased liver. Dandelion root has also been
shown to have potential for fighting cancer. Dandelion
has been shown to uniformly remedy chronic liver congestion,
and has also been used in medical practice to successfully
treat hepatitis, swelling of the liver, jaundice, and
dyspepsia with deficient bile secretion.
Artichoke
(Cyara scolymus) The leaf of artichoke has a strong
bitter taste with a mild laxative action. It stimulates
the secretion of bile in cases of liver malfunction.
Artichoke has also been used for jaundice, dyspepsia
and liver insufficiency. Artichokes contain 'cynarin'
and 'scolymoside' which have been shown to stimulate
bile production and secretion. This supports the traditional
use of artichoke for creating support for sluggish livers
and digestive irregularities. 'Cynarin' creates support
for lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels in
the blood. Artichoke protects the liver against toxins
and infection. It may lower serum cholesterol, improve
digestion, provide liver protection, and suppress free
radicals. It contains potent phytonutrients, such as
chlorogenic acid and luteolin that may help prevent
certain cancers.
Rosemary
(Rosemarinus officinalis) Rosemary has a toning and
calming effect on the digestion and relieves cramps.
Like many culinary herbs, rosemary helps relax muscles,
including the stomach muscles of the digestive tract.
Rosemary is rich in minerals, particularly calcium,
and is easy to absorb. Rosemary is used in Europe as
an aid to liver function and is particularly useful
for ameliorating liver congestion and inflammation.
Rosemary has been used since ancient times. It has a
tonic effect upon the digestive systems. It relaxes
the muscles of digestive tract. The stimulant action
of rosemary helps promote liver function, the production
of bile and proper digestion.
Milk
Thistle (Silybum marianum) Milk thistle has
been used for centuries for liver complaints. Its traditional
use as a liver tonic has been supported by research
showing that it contains constituents which protect
liver cells from chemical damage. Extracts of milk thistle
do indeed protect against some liver toxins through
the action of compounds commonly referred to as silymarin.
Milk Thistle can be used to increase the secretion and
flow of bile from the liver. Historically, this herb
has been used in Europe as a liver tonic. The results
of numerous studies suggest that silymarin not only
protects liver cells by preventing the actions of toxic
substances but that it also stimulates protein synthesis
to accelerate the regeneration and production of liver
cells. Most liver toxins produce their damaging effects
by free radical mechanisms. Silymarin protects red blood
cell membranes against lipid peroxidation caused by
certain red blood cell poisons. Silymarin has been shown
to reverse the effects of highly toxic alkaloids. Silymarin's
hepatoprotective effects are accomplished via several
mechanisms including antioxidation, inhibition of lipid
peroxidation and enhanced liver detoxification. Milk
thistle has been shown to have clinical applications
in the treatment of toxic hepatitis, cirrhosis, ischemic
injury, and viral hepatitis.
The homeopathic
part of the formula with Chelidonium, Carduus Marianus,
Podophyllum, Sanguinaria, Nux Vomica, Chionantus, Glonoinum,
Veratrum Album, Taraxacum, and Liver are prominent liver
remedies, covering many of the direct reflex symptoms
of diseased conditions of that organ. They protects
the liver against toxins and stimulated regeneration
of liver cells. These safe remedies stimulate liver
activity by promoting circulation within the liver.
They stimulate synthesis of bile that supports detoxification
and the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients.
Copper,
zinc, sulfur, silicon, selenium, iron are minerals and
trace elements necessary for the good functioning of
important metabolic reactions in the liver.
